And it sounds like she might have provided many thousands of hours of unpaid and uncredited labor on his various farm plots as well, and probably a lot of unpaid management work for his organization.

Up to then, however, the episode did an excellent job of illustrating some humanities that are often overly mythologized¡ªWashington and enslaved people alike. Great storytelling, as always. (And if you read this, Nate, I hope you take this as just a minor critique from an interested listener, rather than as criticism from an internet monster. Anyway, all the best.)

Any American hearing about Hercules and his master should feel ashamed, but Nate doesn’t try to shame. He give me a scar on my heart that I should have gained earlier, but his voice made the experience, the touch, as humane as possible. Bravo.

Your heart-felt, lyrical prose/poetry really made a strong connection for me to your subject. What an amazing life: To be blessed in early life with a strong sense of who she was, blessed with the intelligence to figure how to live it, and lucky enough to find the exact right partner-in-crime to act it out with.

Googling “Fran prairie chicken” was easy enough to the Wikipedia article and more. Curious
than her husband’s full name was mentioned only once in the podcast and hers, not once–an unintentional omission, I’m sure.

I came across her granddaughter’s website about Fran Hamerstrom’s personally organized post World War II effort organizing friends and colleagues to send 3000 articles of shoes and clothing to people in need in 13 countries. The granddaughter’s book (1000 tracings) was inspired by finding a box full of letters from war torn Europe containing tracings of feet so proper sizes shoes could be sent to face the brutal winter following the war.

Clear, Fran Hamerstrom was even larger and more compassionate in life than even this artful podcast was able to convey.

I’ve had T1D for almost forty years. I got it in my mid twenties. You and your kids have my deepest sympathies. Ive always felt lucky that it didn’t hit me when I was a kid. It would be especially hard on them. I’m sure you are aware of the problems with high blood sugars but the lows can be horrible. Also I suggest putting them on the insulin pump. It really does refine the control. There’s real hope with stem cell research for a permanent cure. Stay optimistic.

There was some crying, yes, but I also found a deeper appreciation for the current availability of insulin and technology which allows diabetics to live long, normal lives. Thank you for the much-needed context. T1D is an expensive, annoying disease, but it is good to remember that once it was a death sentence, and that we’ve come a long way.

I have many memory palace episodes which vie to be my favorite, but this one is the most important to me. I am going to share it far and wide.

From someone who grew up on bru and worked their ass off specifically so they could get into brown and be a part of that wonderful, inspiring, exciting station. And I did. And I was. And now, living in Montreal on this Canadian Thanksgiving, I am thankful. So thankful that bru was there when it was there to help make me who I am. Sidenote, I occasionally fill in on the rock station here… and have on more than one occasion snuck in Vapour Trail, late on a Saturday night… hoping somewhere there’s a group of kids listening in their car with the windows down, arms outstretched, hands surfing through the air…

We recently lost another station, WUMD of UMASS Dartmouth from the air wave (they still broadcast online). WBRU is a mixed bag for me. I used to love it probably up till 2003 or so, and the quality of Dj went really downhill really fast, so they kind of signed their own death sentence (When was the last time you actually tune in to 95.5 to listen for the quality of broadcasting?). On top of it, it was the radio station that agreed to sell itself to the highest bidder, unlike in the case of WUMD that was sold without the knowledge of the station. Anyway, the point is that we have a fundamental problem, so to speak, where we submit to whatever the bottom-line is. I have no idea how to change that.

The soundtrack to my youth came from a handful of radio stations that are gone now, and the songs are inextricably bound up with those memories of the first tastes of freedom, love, and mischief. Your voice is too hypnotic and I have trouble actually grasping the subject you’re trying to cover. It would be awesome if you would add a brief blurb about what the episode is actually about in the notes so that I can then Google it and read up on it myself. Or reference links?

I too drove to the beach blasting BRU, went to dozens of concerts at the now defunct Lupo’s in downtown Providence and probably just as many in India Point Park on the waterfront sponsored by BRU. I couldn’t believe it when I flipped on the station on my way home from work on October 2nd that wasn’t BRU anymore, completely shocked. It’s a major bummer and thanks for the wonderful piece.

He digs into the times when Ms. Lewis, part Native American, was living in the US, and then successfully traveled to live and practice her art in Italy. The magic is conveyed in Nate’s gentle, knowledgeable approach. What a treasure he is to the museum and his many fans. Thank you.

My only suggestion would be that you find a way to allow listeners to hear several sessions at a time, without having to go back to the phone to click on a different episode.

In any case, it’s a great program. I loved the one in rhyme, about McGurdy, but I have liked many others as well, including The Fresh Pond piece. (I used to live in Cambridge.)

I hope someone gives you a lot of money and you become a big star.

As I listened from the other side of the world, in the wintertime here, I found my imagination’s own journey through your sound poem completely transfixing! Not ‘seeing’ what you were describing took my experience to a whole other level. And Mary Lattimore’s music was integral to that. Thank you!

I have no quarrel with any of your episodes, as they all leave my heart a little brighter. This piece was especially playful and let me think how fun it would be to take in an exhibit with you and enjoy it from your eyes. Your narration and still my freedom to choose what to focus on.

I especially enjoyed the happy coincidence that I listened to this episode on Aug 8 (8-8) which is Infinity Day. A day made to celebrate Art, Philosophy, Science and Life. Well played, indeed.

Thank you. For this episode and for your entire podcast.

Heads up that, when the Nazi’s held their rally at Madison Square Garden, MSG was located at 8th avenue and 50th street. The current Garden was opened at its current location at 33rd street in 1968. The Mighty Atom would have been looking for a bat and ladder at a hardware store a handful of blocks uptown.

I’ll get to listen to the story while I’m actually looking at the thing Nate is describing and it’ll be a much better experience.

I’m *so* glad I didn’t skip over this episode. This is the best story Nate has told all year. It’s perfect Memory Palace: a beautiful story, made more beautiful by the music and soothing voice and callbacks to things earlier in the story.

Don’t skip over this episode.

At the Un-National Monument along the Canadian Border

This is the field where the battle did not happen,
where the unknown soldier did not die.
This is the field where grass joined hands,
where no monument stands,
and the only heroic thing is the sky.

Birds fly here without any sound,
unfolding their wings across the open.
No people killed¡ªor were killed¡ªon this ground
hallowed by neglect and an air so tame
that people celebrate it by forgetting its name.

A quick note to offer thanks and encouragement. I love podcasts and yours has risen to the top off my list. I love sharing your stories with my two kids (girl 13 and boy 12) while in the car. They immediately unplug from their devices at the start, listen intently during and have discussions at the end of each podcast. That brings more joy to me then you can imagine. I hope you continue for many years to come.

How about an unsolicited and possibly unwanted story idea?!?…

The ice industry on the late 19th – early 20 century was very important in the development of the country. It allowed for urbanization and expansion of cities. It’s scale was massive and now almost forgotten. I would love to hear a story bringing to life a small part of that industry.

With great affection

Longtime Chicagoan here. I was disappointed to hear the episode end where it did, though the entire thing was lovely. I actually shed a tear ¨C I love this city so much. Chicago had a ferris wheel at Navy Pier from 1995 – 2015 and we have a brand new one as of 2016. I know it’s not the same, but I think it was worth mentioning. I still remember my first time riding. Just because we’ve gone ever higher, with skyscrapers and such, doesn’t mean there isn’t something uniquely thrilling about being in/on a ferris wheel!

I absolutely love your work.

Last week I was so thrilled to hear your voice on Karina Longworth’s podcast last from a years back. Your storytelling style voice are just terrific. I really hope you get a chance to do a live show in the Philadelphia area sometime soon.

I am a history and literacy teacher in alternative education. I have for many years been using audio clips from oral histories and radio documentaries in class and would like to use some of your work.

I wonder if you have ever released transcripts of your shows (Weak readers often benefit from listening and reading along.)

Although I thoroughly appreciate the problems it might cause, I would be happy to pay for the priviledge.

Peace,
Godbless,
and Thanks for your good work;

Every time the academy nominated him someone else came from a more popular production and won the Oscar. When people wasn’t finish mourning his dead in 1997, the exact next day, Jimmy Stewart, an Academy Award for best Actor died taking all the media attention from Mitchum

I’m also so excited there are so many to catch up on ?? Thank you and thank you again… MemoryPalace is great!

Up until about 4 months ago, I lived in Crystal Palace, directly opposite Waterhouse Hawkins¡¯ former house as it happens, and loved it there. Many an afternoon were spent wandering around Crystal Palace Park with my partner and son, looking at the dinosaurs, including the banquet-hosting Iguanadon affectionately known by the locals as ¡®Iggy¡¯.

In July, we all emigrated to Toronto, and whilst it too is a wonderful city, my heart will always be in London, and my time in Crystal Palace was a large part of that. This episode made me feel genuinely homesick for the first time since arriving in Canada, but that homesickness was carried by a wave of incredibly fond memories. Thank you.

A particularly personal episode for me as an American who now lives in South London. I happen to live very near to Crystal Palace and I pass these dinosaurs every weekend on my long run. It still feels magical every time! It was great to hear about them from a non-London perspective, but heartbreaking to picture their creator scrabbling in the dirt in New York. Thanks for shining a light on our neighborhood park — and thanks for all of your wonderful, important story-telling.

I was just at the British Museum of Natural History (where Owen did all his work) a couple days ago. Even according to them, Owen didn’t discover anything. It was either Mary Martell or her paleontologist husband Gideon who found the bones. Gideon Martell thought they looked like a giant iguana, and he did all of the preliminary work. Owen claimed the credit though.

I started yelling. Maybe it was just my own projection, a hundred ideas that have been banging around my own head without a home, and I’m putting too much of my own meaning into this episode…

But, I mean… really… these bottles? This boring, meaningless garbage that I have all over my home and all over everywhere? No – this is not worthy the same respect that goes towards works of real effort and skill and practice and sacrifice.

No matter what, let me say: Thank you, Mr. DiMeo. I love you, and I love your podcast.

First, around 2 minutes, you mention the “green skinned damsels.” I think you’re confusing Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter series. There are red Martians who look just like humans (most notably, the beautiful Dejah Thoris) and green Martians who have six limbs (such as Tars Tarkas) and are not pretty at all and could not be described as damsels.

Second, you mention around 6:50 that Lowell found “two of the moons of Mars.” Mars has only two moons, Phobos and Deimos (fear and terror).

It’s one of those things when someone, and that someone’s researcher, think they know things that they don’t actually know. The best thing to do is to find some zealot about the topic (I’m one on this topic) to check the little details.

At any rate, yours is the best podcast around.

This episode is completely inspirational in it’s intention. I listened to it twice and both times paused, sitting quiet in my seat alone with my thoughts.

The idea or notion of this solitary family photograph left up there and possibly forever, there it is right now as i write laying on the surface of the moon and likely never to be recovered or maybe one day…

The thought of this, the gesture of leaving this photograph is so completely personal and so precisely human, to me this in some ways is more profound than staking your countries flag.

Of course, being a father meant this resonated in a certain way however the idea, the importance of family, and children it is so fundamental to our culture and sense of being human (let alone the survival of our species!) the act of leaving this family photograph, it is so beautiful in it’s meaning and its’ emotion, it just blew me away!

I am a relative newbie to the Memory Palace but i am hooked.

Great job on the show Nate very poetic stuff.

Cheers,
Tom Pilgrim

My life wasn’t my own, my parents didn’t offer any suggestions, they were like deer in the headlights. “312” I was in the last 3rd. I could inhale again, I could make plans for my future, I was back in control. Now at 66 years old I’m thinking not so much of those buddies who died over there but those who came back damaged and have never had the chance to control their lives again.
